1. This essay consists of a series of letters, published in the Orthodox magazine Khristianin (see the Translator’s Introduction). The epistolary form is common to Russian religious writers in the early twentieth century, the most famous example being Florensky’s own Pillar and Ground of the Truth.

2. From St. Seraphim’s conversation with N. A. Motovilov, as recorded in S. Nilus, The Great in the Small.

3. The KJV has been modified.

4. As clarification it should be noted that the priest N. E. B. is, in principle, against instructing and admonishing people who are being confessed, for during the performance of this sacrament he regards himself only as a witness and does not consider it appropriate to introduce his purely human conversations and reflections into the action of grace. (Florensky’s note.)

5. N. E. B. was unsure whether he should call the girl’s second I her Guardian Angel or her purified spiritual center. This is understandable given the close connection between the two concepts. (Florensky’s note.)

6. N. E. B. asked me to emphasize this part. (Florensky’s note.)

7. N. E. B. requested that this story be omitted. (Florensky’s note.)

8. Grigory Spiridonovich Petrov (1868–1925), priest, advocate of Christian socialism.
